The Beauty Of Punjabi Weddings
Punjabis are always at the front to follow up their traditions and customs and they also consider it as proud to follow the traditions. As Punjabis are known by their big heart similar things can be seen in their marriage customs. Too much enjoyment happens from the start of Jago till the day of Punjabi Matrimony ceremony. The main thing which can be seen in Punjabi weddings is a Pleasant atmosphere which makes these weddings most beautiful. Bhangra, Gidha and DJs are the main colours of marriage. The customs which Punjabi weddings nowadays follow are mentioned below:
1. Rokka and engagements:
In this ritual family of the boy go to the house of the girl and give her Shagun. After then “Shuara ritual” is performed in which the father of a girl gives "Sawa" Rs. to the bridegroom. In engagement boys and girls exchange their rings.Engagement is a significant agreement between both the families before marriage.
2.To decide the date of the wedding:
This custom is known as "Shaha Kdona " in Punjabi weddings. In Sikh rituals, the Granthi of gurdwara gives the date by seeing jantri . Sometimes families decides the date without much thought if there is any of holiday or Sunday. The “Saha letter" is given by the family of the girl to the family of the boy through the help of a mediator. After the ritual known as "Shaha Banna " boy and girl is not allowed to go anywhere also any kind of work is not given to both. The main reason to do this is to protect both.
3.Wearing bangles ceremony:
This ceremony is done by the friends of the girl before 1 month of matrimony . In this bangles are Dipped into Lassi and bangles are worn to the bride by her friends.
4.Mayian ceremony :
In Punjabi jatt Matrimony this custom comprises many rituals e.g Batna, Choora, Jago and Ladies Sangeet and Mehndi.
In Batna four ladies make the roof of yellow or red phulkari and under this groom and bride at their own home sites and then a paste consists of Haldi, Bengal gram flour, sandalwood powder, rose water and milk are applied to his/her face legs and arms. Ladies sangeet happens during the night one day before marriage. Bangles are worn to the girl by her maternal uncle.This Choora ceremony performed before 1 or 2days of marriage .Mostly in punjab during the night of ladies sangeet it is performed .
6.Jaggo:
Jago includes singing, dance and Gidda, Bhangra Activities. In this, the one Drummer man or ladies recite boliyan and go to the round of village/city at night. One Lady/girl carries the gagger on her head and turns wise each one who wants to carry the gagger carry on her head. One lady carries a decorated stick with attached bells.
7.Anad Karaj:
This is the most important ceremony without this marriage being incomplete. In this Gursikh Matrimony custom boy/girl takes 4 rounds around guru Granth sahib Ji and one granthi recites shabad during this round ceremony.
